Career

Zama Masondo’s first job was as a teacher at Ukhahlamba High School, in Bergville.

How he joined the SABC

Zama was recruited into the SABC around 1979. At the time, the public broadcaster was recruiting specifically teachers to come and work as radio presenters and commentators. They wanted people who were good with languages, particularly African languages, such as IsiZulu in the case of Zama Masondo. He joined the SABC and quickly transitioned into sports commentary, where he became a beloved voice in South African football. His first game was between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates in 1980.

From SABC, he went on to work for SuperSport for many years, where he continues to display his passionate, bold, and captivating commentary.

Education

Masondo began tertiary studies in 2009, focusing on African Languages. He later earned an honours degree and then a master’s degree in the same field from the University of South Africa (Unisa). He graduated cum laude in 2021, showcasing his commitment to lifelong learning.

Masondo is the author of ‘The Language of Football’, a work that merges his passion for sport and linguistics. He advocates for greater recognition and use of African languages in sports media and education.
