Biography of Tokyo Sexwale: Political Heavyweight and Football Lover

Born in Soweto, Johannesburg, Tokyo Sexwale was a key figure in the anti-apartheid struggle. A former commander in Umkhonto we Sizwe, he was imprisoned on Robben Island for 13 years alongside Nelson Mandela. His activism laid the foundation for his leadership in both politics and business.

After South Africa’s democratic transition, Sexwale became the first Premier of Gauteng Province (1994–1998). He later entered the private sector, founding Mvelaphanda Holdings, with investments across mining, energy, and real estate. From 2009 to 2013, he served as the Minister of Human Settlements in Jacob Zuma’s Cabinet.

Involvement in Football

Mvela Golden League Sponsorship (2004–2007):
Through his company, Mvelaphanda Group, Sexwale sponsored South Africa’s second-tier football division, as the Mvela Golden League.

Attempted Acquisition of Moroka Swallows:
Sexwale made efforts to purchase Moroka Swallows, one of South Africa’s oldest and most storied football clubs.

2010 FIFA World Cup Bid and Organizing Committee:
Sexwale served on both the bid committee and the Local Organizing Committee. His involvement was pivotal in bringing the tournament to Africa for the first time, showcasing the continent’s capability to host world-class sporting events. ​

FIFA Roles and Presidential Candidacy:
Internationally, Sexwale served on FIFA’s anti-racism task force and chaired the Monitoring Committee overseeing relations between the Israeli and Palestinian football associations.

In 2016, he announced his candidacy for FIFA President, advocating for transparency and reform within the organization, but later withdrew from the race. ​

Makana Football Association:
During his imprisonment on Robben Island, Sexwale participated in the Makana Football Association, an informal league established by political prisoners. This initiative not only provided a recreational outlet but also symbolized resistance and unity among inmates.

Personal Life

Marriage: He was married to Judy van Vuuren, a former Miss South Africa contestant. They divorced in the early 2010s.

Children: He has several children from his marriage to Judy.
