🏁 Founding and Early Years (1970–1984)
Cape Town Spurs was founded on 11 January 1970, quickly becoming a cornerstone of football in Cape Town. They entered the Federation Professional League (FPL) in 1971, South Africa’s foremost non-racial football league during the apartheid era.
During their time in the FPL, Spurs were dominant, winning the league seven times between 1971 and 1984. The club was known for its attacking football, strong community ties, and fierce rivalry with other Cape-based clubs.
🔝 Rise in the National Soccer League (1985–1995)
After transitioning into the National Soccer League (NSL) in 1985, Cape Town Spurs continued their winning tradition. Their crowning glory came in the 1995 season, when they captured a historic league and cup double:
- 🏆 NSL League Champions (1995)
- 🏆 Bob Save Super Bowl Winners (1995) – defeating Pretoria City 3-2 in a thrilling final
This period featured a legendary lineup that included:
- David Nyathi – South African international left-back
- Shaun Bartlett – Future Bafana Bafana striker and Charlton Athletic star
- Andre Arendse – Veteran goalkeeper and national team regular
- David Modise and Eric Ramasike – Midfield dynamos
However, financial instability began creeping into the club. Owner David Rodwell, a shoe retail magnate, faced tax issues and financial scrutiny. Despite Spurs’ success, players were not paid their promised prize money.
🔁 Merger and Ajax Cape Town Era (1999–2020)
In 1999, Cape Town Spurs merged with Seven Stars, another Cape-based club owned by Rob Moore – this merger was backed by Dutch giants Ajax Amsterdam – and formed Ajax Cape Town. The goal was to establish a talent pipeline for Ajax Amsterdam.
Ajax Cape Town inherited Spurs’ PSL status and continued to play in the top flight for over two decades. Cape Town Spurs, as a brand, ceased to exist, with the Ajax identity taking center stage.
🔙 Revival of the Spurs Name (2020–Present)
In September 2020, Ajax Amsterdam withdrew its 51% ownership in Ajax Cape Town. The club was fully acquired by Cape Town Stars (led by Ari Efstathiou).
With that, the Cape Town Spurs name was officially revived, and the club returned to its historic identity.
Today, Spurs compete in the NFD, continuing their long mission of developing young talent and restoring their place in South African football’s elite.
