Timeline of PSL trophies and tournaments from the league’s inception in 1996 to the present day (2025). This includes official league titles and domestic cup competitions.


🏆 PSL Trophy & Tournament Timeline (1996 – 2025)

🎯 1. DSTV Premiership (formerly known as):

  • 1996–2007: Castle Premiership
  • 2007–2010: ABSA Premiership
  • 2010–2020: ABSA Premiership (renewed deal)
  • 2020–Present: DSTV Premiership

🥇 Main league title of South African top-flight football since 1996/97.


🏆 2. MTN 8 (Top 8 Tournament)

  • 1996–2002: Rothmans Cup
  • 2003–2007: SAA Supa 8
  • 2008–Present: MTN 8

🏅 Pre-season cup competition featuring the top 8 teams from the previous league season.


🏆 3. Nedbank Cup (FA Cup Equivalent)

  • 1996–2002: Bob Save Super Bowl
  • 2003–2006: ABSA Cup
  • 2007–Present: Nedbank Cup

🏆 Knockout competition open to PSL, NFD, and amateur teams.


🏆 4. Telkom Knockout

  • 1996–2001: Coca-Cola Cup
  • 2002–2005: Coca-Cola Cup (renewed)
  • 2006–2019: Telkom Knockout
  • 2020–2023: Suspended
  • 2024–Present: Carling Knockout Cup (rebranded return)

⚔️ Mid-season knockout tournament featuring all 16 PSL teams.


🏆 5. Carling Black Label Cup / Carling Knockout Cup

  • 2011–2019: Carling Black Label Cup (1-match fan-vote derby, Soweto Derby only)
  • 2023–Present: Carling Knockout Cup (full competition replacing Telkom Knockout)

🥤 Originally a fan-selected exhibition; now rebranded as a proper competition.


🏆 6. Charity Cup / One-Day Cups

  • 1996–2010: Iwisa Charity Spectacular / Telkom Charity Cup

🎟️ One-day pre-season event (4 teams, fan-voted). Discontinued after 2010.
