The FNB Stadium is probably the most iconic stadium in South Africa. The official name of the stadium is Soccer City but it is called by its sponsor’s name – The First National Bank (FNB). Situated in the south of Johannesburg, the FNB Stadium was opened officially in 1989.
It hosted many sporting, musical and political events since that time until to the lead up to the 2010 FIFA World Cup when it was upgraded to an 87 000 seater stadium. The FNB Stadium serves as the home ground of Kaizer Chiefs FC.

Notable Events That Took Place at Soccer City:
1990 – Nelson Mandela gave his first speech after being released from prison.
1993 – Memorial Service of Chris Hani. Chris Hani was a former leader of the uMkhonto weSizwe, the underground military wing of the African National Congress during the apartheid era. He was assassinated by the right wing elements that were opposed to the ending of apartheid in 1993.
1993 – Memorial Service of Oliver Tambo, the former president of the African National Congress during its underground years. Oliver Tambo spent many years of his life in exile mobilizing the world against the apartheid regime in South Africa.
1996 – African Cup of Nations opening game, 5 other group games, a quarter final, a semi-final, the 3rd place play-off and the final.
2010 – FIFA World Cup opening ceremony, the opening match between South Africa and Mexico, 4 other group stage matches, a Round of 16 match, the quarter-final and the final.
2010 – First rugby match at the stadium. A Trinations match between South Africa and New Zealand.
2013 – Africa Cup of Nations final.
2013 – The memorial service for the first democratic president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela. Former American president, Barack Obama was the key note speaker.
2017 – Rapper Cassper Nyovest hosted his Fill Up concert at the stadium.
