George Goch Stadium

Table of Contents

The George Goch Stadium is situated in the city centre of Johannesburg in the area known as George Goch. It is named after George Henry Goch, who died in 1918. George Goch was one of the earliest mining owners in the Witwatersrand area and among those who established the Chamber of Mines.

In the 1980s and 1990s, the Gorge Goch stadium was buzzing with football. Sometimes even hosting matches between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates. Check out the below picture of Jomo Sono and Scara Thindwa in the Soweto Derby by Sowetan at the George Goch Stadium.

Tragedy:

In 1998, three Moroka Swallows players were struck by lightning during a PSL match against Jomo Cosmos at the stadium. The players were rushed to hospital were they recovered.

Current use:

The stadium is currently in very bad condition. It is in ruins.

Before it started dilapidating, the stadium was mainly used for local sports events and community activities. Some political parties used to hold their rallies there and some churches also used to hold their services there.
