The Loftus Stadium was first built in the 1920s and it was named after Robert Loftus Versfeld. Loftus Versfeld was a key figure in the development of rugby in Pretoria.
After 1994, the stadium began to host football matches as well.
Loftus Stadium was upgraded in the lead up to the FIFA World Cup held in South Africa in 2010.
Current use
Loftus Stadium is currently used by Mamelodi Sundowns FC to host some of its home matches. Other times Mamelodi Sundowns uses Masterpieces Prince Moripe Stadium to host its home matches. The Masterpieces Lucas Moripe Stadium is situated in the township of Attridgeville, west of Pretoria.
Loftus Stadium is also home to the Blue Bulls rugby club. The Blue Bulls use the Loftus Stadium to host home matches.
