Early Life and Education

Robert Marawa was born on 1 March 1973, in the rural areas of Kwazulu Natal Province. He attended Hilton College, one of the country’s top private schools, and later enrolled at the University of Witwatersrand (Wits) to study law. In an interview with Sizwe Mpofu-Welsh (pictured above), Marawa revealed that he used to hold resentment towards Hilton College because of the racial discrimination he experienced when he was still at the school.

He is the grand-child of Bishop …. who also served in the Kwazulu Natal legislature and was friends with the leader of the IFP, Mangosuthu Buthelezi. However, it doesn’t appear that his own parents were rich. They owned a farm store whose proceeds they used to send him and his siblings, one of whom is another famous TV star, Vanessa Marawa to good schools. They sacrificed a lot to afford those schools, Marawa has revealed.

Although he initially pursued a legal career, Marawa soon found his true calling in sports journalism and broadcasting, making the shift to media in the mid-1990s and quitting university in the process. He recently revealed that he plans to go back and complete his studies in law. But before taking the route in sports broadcasting, he started at the SABC doing links on the promo campaign known as “Simunye, We Are One” on SABC 1.
