A Club Founded by Community and Culture
Vasco da Gama FC was founded in 1980 in Cape Town by members of a Portuguese community in Cape Town. Inspired by a Brazilian club of the same name, the Cape Town-based Vasco was formed to represent their community.
The club’s red and white kits, its crest, and its community-based ethos reflected the roots and values of its founders. Though modest in resources, Vasco built a strong local following, particularly in Parow and the greater Cape Flats area.
⚽ From Amateur Champions to Professional Status (1980s–2000s)
In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Vasco won multiple SA Amateur Club Championships (1988 and 1990), establishing itself as one of Cape Town’s most competitive amateur clubs. After success in the Western Cape Vodacom League, they earned promotion to the National First Division (NFD) in 2003, marking their first step into professional football.
By the mid-2000s, Vasco had become a consistent force in the NFD:
- 2005/06: Reached the NFD playoffs
- 2006: Narrowly missed promotion after losing the final to Benoni Premier United
🆙 A Historic Leap to the PSL (2009–2011)
After rebuilding and dominating the NFD Coastal Stream, Vasco won promotion to the PSL in 2010 by defeating Black Leopards 3–2 on aggregate in the playoffs.
🏟️ 2010/11 Season: A Tough PSL Debut
- Finished 15th in their debut Premier Soccer League campaign
- Entered the promotion/relegation playoffs, where they failed to retain their status
- Relegated after just one season in the top flight
Though their stay in the PSL was brief, Vasco earned national respect for their competitiveness and professionalism on a limited budget.
🔁 Return to the NFD and Consistent Mid-table Finishes (2011–2016)
Vasco continued competing in the National First Division until 2016, consistently finishing in mid-table positions:

🔁 Sale and Transition to Stellenbosch FC (2016)
In August 2016, club owner Mario Ferreira sold the Vasco da Gama NFD franchise to create a new team — Stellenbosch FC. The new club is based in the Cape Winelands and took over Vasco’s league status and player contracts.
While Stellenbosch FC continued professionally, Vasco da Gama as a club returned to amateur status and ceased to exist in the professional divisions.
🚀 Rebuilding from the Ground Up (2016–2024)
Despite the professional setback, Vasco FC was revived at grassroots level and began competing in the SAFA Regional Leagues. They worked to reclaim their position in the professional tiers.
