The Rand Stadium

The Rand Stadium is a located in Rossetenville, Johannesburg.

The Rand Stadium was opened in 1951. It was home of Highlands Park FC, which existed from 1959 until 1982 when it was bought by Jomo Cosmos. Highlands Park made a resurgence again in 2016 but the club was relegated the next season in 2017.

The stadium was demolished and rebuilt in 2006. It was used as a training field during the FIFA 2010 World Cup.

Notable Events That Have Taken Place at the Rand Stadium:

1975 – Champion of Champions final between Kaizer Chiefs and Hellenic

1978 – Wits University beat Kaizer Chiefs in the final of the Mainstay Cup

1993 –African Cup of Nations qualifier between South Africa and Mauritius.

2009 – Nedbank Cup Final between Moroka Swallows and University of Pretoria FC.

2015 – African Cup of Nations qualifier between South Africa and Angola

1987 – Plooy vs Mike Weaver fight

1993 – Arnold Taylor vs Romeo Anaya fight
